Build Your Own Website Using Different Programming Languages

by Tem Balanco

If you want to build your own website, you should have a proficient knowledge of different programming languages, codes, and the program you will use to create one. The advantage of creating your website from scratch is that it gives you flexibility in terms of designing your webpage. However, this takes a really long and complicated process. To create one, you got to have these: knowledge and skill in HTML; an HTML editor; image editing software; and web hosting provider. There are four most commonly used programming languages used in creating websites. HTML, Javascript, Java, PHP, and CSS are the commonly used programming languages. Ruby on Rails, ASP.net, and Perl languages have also been developed alongside the introduction of Web 2.0.

The most commonly used language by programmers is HTML or hypertext markup language. Basically comprising all types of web pages are HTML codes. Physicist Tim Bernes Lee in 1980 developed this markup language to create a program that will allow the researchers to share and use documents within their company, CERN. Consists of hypertext and tags, HTML codes are read by web browsers and transforms it into a viewable webpage. The programming language features attributes, character and entity references. Tech experts have modified the language through the years, making it compatible with all other languages used to create websites.

One of the recommended languages you can use to build your own website are Javascript and the Java. It is also used to draft dynamic applications and programs. Supporting advanced programming styles, Java is a multi-paradigm language compared to HTML. It was the brainchild of Netscape's Brendan Eich. Used by client-server applications in the web, the Java programming language, meanwhile is most popularly used programming language nowadays. It was originally intended to provide an interactive television in 1995 by its developers James Gosling, Patrick Naughton, and Mike Sheridan. Almost every system platform is compatible with a Java-run program. It is highly used in the field of graphics and networking.

The CSS, or the Cascading Style Sheets is another popular tool you can use to build your own website. It is a style language which is capable of formatting a document in markup language formats such as HTML, XHTML, and XML. The style (colors, fonts, layout) is separated from the text (content). A webpage can be modified through CSS. Using a few keywords as syntax, CSS was developed by Robert Cailliau.

The hypertext processor or PHP is a scripting language mainly used for creating advanced and functional web pages. Developed by Rasmus Ledorf, it is designed as a standalone interpreter which works on almost all platforms and operating system, and runs on a web server. PHP can be used in database management software and GUI applications.

A single programming language is not easy to learn. A professional web designer is always preferred over learning the codes manually.

If you're planning to build your own website from scratch, you'll need to at least learn and master one programming language to help you create a dynamic website. The most common programming languages are HTML, Java, CSS, and PHP. The development of Web 2.0 paved way for other languages like Ruby on Rails, ASP.net, and Perl. These languages basically operate through the use of codes or syntax, read by browsers and operating systems.
